How the California DMV database supports online voter registration

Artemio Armenta, a Public Information Officer at the California Department of Motor Vehicles (CA DMV), has provided Etopia News with a concise and on-point description of the operation of a computerized system that allows eligible Californians to register online to vote by accessing a copy of their digitized signature from the DMV”s Driver License and Identification Database.

Here’s what he said:

"The application has been operational prior to the last general election. Through the implementation of SB 397 – Online Voter Registration, it successfully established an automated process to validate voter registration data entered by an applicant and match the information against DMV Driver License and Identification Database. This allows an applicant to complete voter registration online. If a match is found for a voter, DMV will electronically transmit the digital image of the signature of record to the Secretary of State, which will forward to the County."
